6 Reasons to Take Your Family to See a Show from The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

As a mom of 3 who is busy and often stretched way too thin, I often think adding MORE things to our list is a bad idea. But I can say for certain, this IS something you NEED to add to your family’s to-do list! The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati usually offers 3-4 shows per season which run roughly from September – April, so the commitment is minimal, but the return is huge. Keep reading to find out why.

  1. Kids are NEVER too young to learn ā€˜theatre mannersā€™. Theatre manners go way beyond the theatre and it’s a skill for a lifetime! Young ones learn to sit patiently, keep quiet and pay attention. The key word is LEARN! Your littles won’t have a chance to learn this if you don’t expose them to these situations. Shows are about 60-70 minutes so if your child can sit through a short Disney animated movie, they are ready to go.

I took my kids at 2 years old and we didn’t get kicked out šŸ˜‚. Know that your kids won’t be perfect but the sound system usually ‘out volumes’ them and there is always a chance to make a quick exit to regroup. Be prepared for lots of lap surfing if there’s more than one adult!
  2. The set design and costumes at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati are inspiring. The costuming and set designs can spark inspiration in kids of all ages. Even young kids love the colors, sounds and dancing that happens LIVE on-stage. There is so much to catch their attention as they engage in live performances as see the costumes, set and sounds come together on stage.
  3. Seeing peers on stage builds confidence and respect for the arts. Elementary and junior high kids are inspired to see their peers in performing roles on stage. They see them confidently on stage delivering lines, songs and dance routines among other peers and adults. I know this has inspired my daughter to try performing arts and although it’s not my son’s calling, he has gained the respect for those that do!
  4. The learning and exploring continues after the show. If the story line or performance sparks a conversation in your house, you can keep the conversation going after the show! There are study guides for each show, so elementary age kids can learn more about the performance, costumes, set decor and more! Or listen to one of their podcasts before the show! This is a much better way to spend 30 minutes on the weekend besides more screen time! You can also listen to the TCT Podcast, Audio Footlights by The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati here and wherever you get your podcasts.
  5. See LIVE creativity in action! We are so programmed to watch things on demand – when we want, where we want. There is something to be said for making a commitment to go to the theatre and watch a LIVE show! Seeing a ‘show must go on’ moment, or the fact that someone is coordinating lights to sync with the actors’ movements or lines. All of this is lost when you see a typical movie or TV show. You can only find experiences like this in LIVE theatre. If you see a moment where a mistake happens on stage, it’s a great talking point with kids to show that the actor or actress took it in stride. We all make mistakes and whether it’s in front of 1 person or 1000 people, we just keep going!
  6. Itā€™s a family bonding experience like no other. We make each show a date! We get dressed up and make a reservation for lunch or dinner after the show so it’s built-in quality time during our busy weekends. Sometimes, we make it a downtown Cincinnati day and ride the streetcar, ice skate during the holidays or just explore the city and stop for a treat. A season subscription is the best way to schedule these days in advance on your calendar.

The Childrenā€™s Theatre of Cincinnati shows are such a great experience for families with kids of all ages. Each of my kids have experienced them multiple times and they are still thrilled to go to shows after many years.

Consider asking for a Season Subscription for a holiday gift from the grandparents, or gift that to your family! It guarantees great seats for each show.

Cincinnati Icons | LaRosa’s Pizza and The Mural Tour

Cincinnati Murals

Looking for some good food and unique fun? LaRosa’s and the Artworks Mural tour have you covered. In partnership with LaRosa’s, I’ve mapped out a fun and TASTY way to explore the gorgeous artwork throughout the Downtown Cincinnati and OTR.

LaRosa's Mural Tour

LaRosa's Picnic in the Park

We started the Artworks Mural Tour with a picnic in the lawn across from Carol Ann’s Carousel at 8 E Mehring Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202 in front of the iconic ‘Sing the Queen City’ installation.Ā

Pack a blanket or just take a seat on the letters ;). You can either grab LaRosa’s curbside pickup on your way down, or there are 2 locations that will deliver to the Carousel at 8 E Mehring Way. Order on the app, online or by calling 513-347-1111. But first, check out theĀ  LaRosa’s Menu.Ā

Pro-tips for a great picnic:Ā

  • Ask for paper plates and napkins when ordering.
  • Order boneless wings (we like BBQ) or the pepperoni rondos if you plan to take some snacks on the road with you. They are easy to eat right out of the box or on the go!
  • Hoagies and kitchen chips with BBQ are a perfect alternative if you’re not in the mood for pizza (that NEVER happens to me, but I hear that happens sometimes šŸ˜‰
  • Also, add some chocolate chunk cookies to your order to enjoy on the drive and score extra fun points with the family.
LaRosa's Picnic

Start At The National Underground Freedom Center

If you can, park on the street near the National Underground Freedom Center, 50 E Freedom Way, Cincinnati, OH 45202. You can walk to the first mural from there and enjoy your picnic from there.Ā

If you want to make your own Artworks Mural tour, you will want this Artworks Mural Map. Otherwise, follow our guide below.Ā

Artworks Murals Near The Banks

Start at the outdoor ‘Sing the Queen City’ sculpture – 25 E Freedom Way – for some great photo ops with the skyline in the background. The kids enjoyed some wings while seated in between the letters ;).

We then ventured over on foot to ‘The Cobbler’s Apprentice Plays Ball’ – 120 E Freedom Way – and took a selfie. Beware, there is a smelly dumpster there that puts a little damper on the work of art. So, it might be best to view that one from the car!Ā  šŸ˜‰

Artworks Mural Driving Tour

In this driving tour you will see several different styles of art. See if your kids understand the difference between the styles – is it realism, abstract, photorealism? Learn more about the different styles here.

Play along? If you follow the tour I have outlined on the map below, give bragging rights to the first person that sees the most items below:

  • Astronaunt
  • R2D2
  • A Dinosaur
  • Smiling cake
  • Butterfly
  • Tomatoes

Many of the SERG Restaurants have lunch specials and rewards that you find on their app – see above. Honestly, lunch is a great time to go enjoy a meal and avoid the crowds. Ā

We LOVE Coco’s on the Beach 663 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 — this is best accessed from the beach – beach marker #94 A, Coco’s is at the end of boardwalk on the beach. We ride our bikes from Palmetto Dunes and wear beach coverups. It’s VERY casual!Ā

Hilton Head Kid-Friendly Vacation Rentals

We’ve been going to Hilton Head Island, SC for 35+ years. I went as a child and now we go with my kids. I’ve watched the island grow up, just as I have, and have a fondness for all things in Hilton Head.

The lowcountry is like no other place:
šŸ–ļø Don’t expect white sand beaches filled with shells & clear ocean water. But the beaches offer a TON of space at low tide and the sand is packed down making walk, pushing a stroller or riding a bike much more enjoyable than many other beach locations. Plus, the packed sand is great for beach games.Ā
šŸŒ± Hilton Head is famous for the spanish moss trees which offer shade and beauty everywhere you go on the island.Ā
šŸš“ā€ā™‚ļø The bike trails all over the island make Hilton Head so family-friendly.Ā

Here are all my favorite Hilton Head kid friendly vacation rentals.

Hilton Head Vacation Rentals | Geography of the Island

Hilton Head Island, SC, famously shaped like a shoe, consists of a few different areas and plantations, each offering a unique experience. I’ll breakdown each option so you can see what’s the right fit for your family dynamic and needs.

  • Sea Pines Plantation – a fee is required to enter plantation
  • Palmetto Dunes Plantation – a fee is required to enter plantation
  • (North & South) Forest Beach
  • Shipyard Plantation – a fee is required to enter plantation
  • Several Hotel options if you prefer to have more amenities

Hilton Head Vacation Rentals | Sea Pines

Sea Pines offers tons of Hilton Head kid friendly vacation rentals and is famous for the lighthouse in Harbour Town and the Salty Dog Cafe in South Beach Marina.Ā

Is Sea Pines the right place for your family to stay on Hilton Head Island? Here are some pros and cons.

PRO: Tons of non-beach things to do within Sea Pines! Plus, there’s a trolley you can ride for free throughout the plantation. This is KEY because finding a parking spot at local attractions within the plantation is HARD, especially during the summer season.

CON: There are not very many beachfront condo rentals. There are several beachfront and 2nd & 3rd row homes with private pools, but most of the condo and villa options are within a bike ride or walk from the beach. Palmetto Dunes is the best option for beachfront condos.

Within Sea Pines, your best best for beachfront condos is in south beach marina area near the famous Salty Dog Cafe. Check out Beach Properties for Hilton Head rentals in Sea Pines. Places like Lands End, Beachside Tennis and South Beach Villas will be a quick walk to the beach.

The best way to be close to the beach inĀ Sea Pines is to rent a home. Try a 2nd or 3rd row home for a quick walk to the beach and you’ll have your own private pool. If you rent a home from Sea Pines Vacation Rentals, you still get all the amenities from the Sea Pines Beach club, the golf courses and the trolley within Sea Pines. My favorite place to stay in Sea Pines is Turtle Lane Club. They are 2 and 3 bedroom villas with your own garage. An easy walk to the beach and a community pool that is rarely crowded.Ā

There are plenty of other vacation rentals that are a quick bike ride to the beach. Everyone bikes in Hilton Head and you can rent cargo carts to bring your beach gear with you for a quick, easy ride.

Harbour Town

What To Do In Sea Pines

If you’re staying in Sea Pines, be sure to rent bikes to enjoy the paved trails and beach rides. We love riding bikes to Salty Dog Cafe and Harbour Town to shop, grab a meal or listen to live music.Ā

You can ride the free trolley to harbor town, salty dog and a few other places within the plantation.Ā

Try tennis or ride the horses at Lawton Stables.

Of course, if you have golfers in the family, there are world class courses in Sea Pines. And if you book accommodations early through Sea Pines, they often include golf promotions.Ā

Find plenty of family-friendly activities on Hilton Head Island, here.

Hilton Head Vacation Rentals | Palmetto Dunes

Palmetto Dunes also offers tons of Hilton Head kid-friendly vacation rentals. It’s a pretty quiet, secluded family location with excellent bike paths and tons of beachfront property.Ā Ā

PRO: Plenty of beachfront condos and beachfront or 2nd and 3rd row vacation homes! Many homes have a private pool and the beachfront condos often have multiple pools.Ā

CON: There are not as many non-beach activities to find like there are in Sea Pines. But,Ā you can ride your bike on the path to Shelter Cove across the main road for shopping, restaurants, ice cream and live entertainment..

We love renting a private home that’s beachfront or 2nd – 4th row on the streets along Mooring Buoy. They are in alpha order, A – N, with A being closest to the Marriott Hotel. In general, the beaches are usually much less crowded in Palmetto Dunes, as compared to Sea Pines, with the exception of the Marriott area where there is also public beach access.Ā

If your family is looking for a beachfront condo, my favorites are Captains Walk, Hampton Place and any of the Windsor’s. If you have littles, both of the Windsor hotels have zero entry pools!

Check out Beach Properties for Hilton Head home rentals in Palmetto Dunes.

I also often use for Sunset Rentals Hilton Head vacation rentals and Island Getaway has a great selection of homes and condo rentals.

What To Do In Palmetto Dunes

If you’re staying in Palmetto Dunes, be sure to rent bikes to enjoy the paved trails and beach rides. We love riding to the General Store for breakfast, a treat for the kids or to replenish our adult beverages. They have great BBQ lunch options too, which he smokes right there.

You can also ride bikes to Shelter Cove Plaza for shopping, Kilwins Ice Cream and tons of lunch places.

If you’re into pickleball or tennis, you can rent a court at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

One of our favorite family traditions is to bike down the beach, about a mile, and enjoy an epic burger and beer from Coco’s on the Beach. The owners are from Ohio, so many items are inspired by towns in Ohio. Try the Buckeye Burger! You can map it on your phone navigation, but look for mile marker 94A and you will see the volleyball courts and Coco’s down the boardwalk.

Find plenty of family-friendly activities on Hilton Head Island, here.

Hilton Head Vacation Rentals | North & South Forest Beach

North & South Forest Beaches are also great places to stay. There are several hotel options and beachfront condos.

PRO: Plenty of beachfront condos at reasonable prices!Ā

CON: You are on a main road, so biking is limited more to the beach, unless you have older kids. Also, beaches tend to be more crowded than Palmetto Dunes and parts of Sea Pines.

The most popular beachfront condo are Shorewood Villas with a zero entry pool, which is perfect for littles and non-swimmers and Seacrest Oceanfront Resort.

If you like hotel options, Marriott Grande and Ocean Oak by Hilton Grand Vacations are both great choices.

You can easily walk or bike to Coligny Plaza to find food, shopping and treats.Ā

Additional Options For Hilton Head Vacation Rentals

While I have not stayed at many of these places, many friends I know have enjoyed these options.Ā

What to Expect at the Air Force Museum

  • This place is huge, so bring a stroller for little legs who may get tired and expect to walk far from the parking lot.
  • There is a place to get food, but I wouldn’t recommend staying for lunch.
  • You can explore several different hangars filled with planes and memorabilia from WWI, WWII, Presidential Air Force One planes, fighter jets from recent days and simulation machines.
  • Not sure where to go? Don’t worry, there is a ton of signage and volunteers everywhere. Many of the volunteers are retired Air Force members who are happy to show you where to find something, tell you a story about a specific plane or just give a friendly smile.Ā

There is an open aircraft day once a month on Saturdays, that allow a guided look inside the cockpit, airplane talks and more. This is a great reason to go, but beware of crowds. The museum itself is HUGE, so that is helpful on more popular days and times.Ā

Captain of the Kids Itinerary: The Air Force Museum

If you’re coming from Cincinnati, start your day early and stop for donuts on your way through Centerville before you get to the Air Force Museum.Ā
Bill’s Donut Shop: 268 N Main St, Centerville, OH 45459

Get there early to avoid crowds – the museum opens at 9am. If you want to see more ‘current’ planes, head straight back.Ā

You can always pack lunch and have a picnic outside the museum because there is a huge garden with picnic tables. If you want to grab lunch out, tryĀ Old Scratch Pizza near UD, about 15 mins away. They have Mickey shaped pizzas for the kids! This makes the timing perfect if you have a napper because they can snooze on the way home!

If it’s a nice day, it’s a perfect opportunity to get lunch at Young’s, about 25 mins east. This place is open year-round. TRY THE CHEESE CURDS and the Ice Cream! Make an afternoon of it by feeding the goats, playing in the new barn store, and playing play putt putt at Putters and Udders. Or test your swing at the driving range or the batting cages!Ā

Less than 15 minutes away, Boonshoft is a science and natural history museum & zoo all in one! If your crew is up for it, this museum is a great way to keep the fun going before heading back home. Get all the details on admission and exhibits here: Boonshoft Museum.

Follow this Google Map from Cincinnati with a stop at Bill’s Donut Shop, The Air Force Museum, then lunch and play at Young’s Jersey Dairy.

Hocking Hills with the Family

Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills truly is a great place to take the family. Yes, Hocking Hills is kid-friendly. No, you don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy. Seriously! Check out my tips and tricks below – what hikes are kid-friendly and what hikes you should avoid.Ā

There are tons of other adventures too! Try zip lines, archery and spend time fishing at Lake Logan State Park.Ā

Ash Cave Hocking Hills

What to know before you go to Hocking Hills

šŸ“±Cell service is VERY limited in the region. We have Verizon and there wasn’t a reliable signal most of the weekend. So, plan to get off the grid and enjoy!
āš ļø Good news, the main attractions are really well marked with turn by turn signs and milage indicators. Since cell service is very limited and I live by directions from my phone, I was worried about finding places. But we got everywhere just fine!Ā
šŸš— All trails have a parking lot that is very well marked. For the most part, there were bathrooms and picnic tables at each place, perfect for a picnic.
šŸ„¾ Before you go, download the Hocking Hills App (iPhone & Android) for trail info & offline hiking maps, weather reports & more.Ā
šŸ¶ Most of the trails are pet friendly, with the exception of Conkels Hollow Nature Preserve. But, there are a few hikes, which I note below, that I would not bring my dog who tends to pull and get excited
šŸ•¦ Trails are crowded mid-day, so get out first thing in the morning or late afternoon or go during the week. Click here for Hocking Hills Hiking Maps.

See this Google Map below to get a sense of where all the trails are. I would suggest pairing Ash Cave with Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls. Then hit Conkles Hollow and Rock House the next day.

>> Kid-Friendly Hikes in Hocking Hills

I’ll say it again…Yes, Hocking Hills is kid-friendly and no, you don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy. Seriously! My first clue, we ‘hiked’ behind a stroller on one of the trails that was paved. High-fives to that mama! Also, someone behind us was on crutches for the Old Man’s trail hike. Totally BA, lady! šŸ˜‰

See below for kid-friendly hikes. And for ones you should do if you have older kids or get away without the littles!Ā

Ash Cave Trail in Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills
Hocking Hills
Hocking Hills

To get there: Just follow the road signs for Ash Cave and park in the parking lot across the street.
Trail details for Ash Cave: This trail is a quick one with a PAVED path for the part as you walk to the cave, we walked behind someone pushing a stroller. The cave is STUNNING! This is a MUST visit and can be done in 45mins or less. My kids loved to play in the sand inside the cave overhang and climb the rocks inside. They ran through the waterfall, which is obviously seasonal. Visit in winter too – a friend showed me a picture in the winter of the frozen ‘pile’ of water and it sealed the deal. We will go back in the winter!

Old Man's Cave Trail in Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills

To get there: Just follow the road signs for Old Man’s Cave and park in the parking lot. It’s located right next to the Hocking Hills State Park campsite. And you can actually hike a trail from the RV and tent sites that will lead you to the trail entrance. But, the hike back is a steady, long climb!

Trail details for Old Man’s Cave: This trail is so unique with something amazing to see at every turn. There are waterfalls, ‘devils bathtub’ and small rock caves to climb in, unique bridges and steps cut out of the rocks. This trail can be done in about an hour or less and is kid-friendly, but stay close because there are a few places where holding littles hands is necessary.Ā

Conkels Hollow Nature Preserve in Hocking Hills

**Note, not pets are allowed on these trails.
To get there:
Just follow the road signs for Conkels Hollow Nature Preserve and park in the lot.Ā
Trail details for Conkels Hollow: If you have kids, stick to the Gorge trail. It’s a mostly flat, 1 mile trail that ends at a waterfall. The Rim trail is much more difficult and not recommended for kids.Ā

Cedar Falls Trail in Hocking Hills

To get there: Just follow the road signs for Cedar Falls and park in the lot. It’s a small lot, so expect it to be full. If your crew can endure a longer hike, connect from Ash Cave upper gorge (walk up the stairs and turn left at the top – there is sign.) It’s about an additional 2.5 miles to get there.Ā
Trail details for Cedar Falls:Ā A 1/2-mile hike, ending at a beautiful waterfall – the largest in volume in all of Hocking Hills. The hike is moderate and takes about 30 minutes. There are several stairs to climb down & up.

>> Not so Kid-Friendly Hikes in Hocking Hills

These trails are worth if if you can get away without the littles! It truly feels like another world in Hocking Hills!

Rock House Trail in Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills Cave
Rock House Cave
Hocking Hills

**This one is borderline kid-friendly. See my notes below.
To get there:
Just follow the road signs for Rock House and park in the lot.Ā
Trail details for Rock House: I would not take my 4 year old on this hike, but I think my 7 & 9 year old could handle it. If you have older kids that are smart hikers, they will LOVE this! Rock House is the only fully enclosed cave in Hocking Hills. It’s stunning and worth the trip. Although this trail allows dogs, I would not take my dog because she pulls and there are too many places to slip!Ā

STEEP cliff warning: There are stairs after the rock house cave that go down to another small waterfall and cave overhang. The stairs have a STEEP cliff off the side and there is no railing, so watch the kids here! See the picture above.Ā

Cantwell Cliff Trail in Hocking Hills

To get there: Just follow the road signs for Cantwell Cliffs and park in the lot.Ā
Trail details for Cantwell Cliffs: The 1 mile hike starts with something called ‘fat woman squeeze’ which is a skinny set of stairs carved into the rock to enter the cave, pictured below. If you are claustrophobic, this might be too intense for you. This hike is very unique and strenuous at times with significant elevation changes and ends with a steady climb back up.Ā

Hocking Hills

where to stay in Hocking Hills

There are so many choices for cabins and camping in Hocking Hills, it can be overwhelming. We stayed at the Hocking Hills State Campground since we were traveling with a camper. If you’re looking for cabins, I’ve heard great things about:
Cherry Ridge Retreat in Hocking Hills
The Lodges at Cedar Falls
Hocking Hills Treehouse Cabins
Dunlap Hollow, a gorgeous Aframe!
A great place to start is the Hocking Hills Tourism Association page. You can search for available places to stay in Hocking Hills all in one place.Ā

Take the Kids to Trammel Fossil Park Near Sharon Woods

fossil hunting in Cincinnati

Do your kids like to get dirty and hunt for treasures? If so, Trammel Fossil Park is an adventure you should try! There are a few things you should know before you go, so check this out.

Things to do with kids in Cincinnati
dig for fossils in cincinnati

Where is Trammel Fossil Park?

šŸ“Located at 11935 Tramway Dr, Sharonville, OH 45241, Trammel Fossil Park is in an industrial neighborhood in Sharonville, Oh. It’s not what you may expect. It’s a HUGE, wide-open hill of rocks and fossils to uncover. It’s FREE to explore and you can take home all the treasures you find.

Note, the terrain is rocky, because it’s literally a mountain of fossil rocks. So if you have littles, it might be best to have them in a carrier. There are some lower areas to dig and traverse, but this is not a place for kids to run around due to the steep sections of the hill.

What to bring to Trammel Fossil Park?

Since the park is FREE to explore and you can take home what you find, be sure to bring a few things. If you arrive with nothing, you will still find treasures to line your pockets without these tools, but here is what I suggest:

šŸŖ£ buckets for collecting treasures
ā› shovels or screwdriver for digging – gardening tools work well.
šŸ’¦ spray bottle or water gun to clean off your treasures or help ‘unearth them’.Ā
šŸ§» an old rag to wash the dirt off the fossils and a towel to wash the dirt off the kids afterwards šŸ˜‰
šŸ§“hats and sunscreen – there is NO shade there!
šŸŖØ want to identify what you found? Print this Ohio Fossil ID Guide here.
šŸ„Ŗ you can pack a lunch or snack – there are picnic tables there to use.

Captain of the Kids Itinerary: Trammel Fossil Park

Plan to get dirty and have some fun! Trammel Fossil Park: 11935 Tramway Dr, Sharonville, OH 45241

There are picnic tables at Trammel Fossil Park, so pack a lunch for your crew to enjoy. Be sure to bring baby wipes to clean off dirty hands.

Or, head down the street to The Root Beer Stand (open seasonally): 11566 Reading Rd, Sharonville, OH 45241. Chili dogs, cheeseburgers and floats are what’s on the menu! Plus, there are picnic tables and a small playground to play on after you eat.

Since you’re already messy and the kids need to run off that sugar, take them for a hike at Sharon Woods: 11450 Lebanon Rd, Sharonville, OH 45241. We love the Gorge Trail. It’s a great, flat hike out and back wooded trail with places to sit and view the waterfalls.Ā

What's Near Trammel Fossil Park?

Trammel Fossil Park is fun and unique, but don’t expect it to be a place you spend hours. Unless your kids have a crazy attention span and they are obsessed with fossils šŸ˜‰

I would suggest pairing this activity with something else like:

šŸ§‹Stop by the famousĀ Root Beer StandĀ for lunch or a float. There are picnic tables and a small playground behind the stand for customer use.

Keep exploring the outdoors at Sharon Woods, just down the street at 11450 Lebanon Road Sharonville, OH 45241.
šŸ„¾Hike one of the trails: the Gorge Trail is a flat hike out and back wooded trail with places to sit and view the waterfall. At the end of the trail, you can climb down the steps at the dam for more fun and adventure. There is also a 2.6-mile paved trail around the lake called the shared use trail and a 1.0-mile fitness trail with exercise challenges along the way.
šŸ’¦ Splash in the waterfall, turn left onto Buckeye Falls Dr after you enter the park and you’ll see the waterfall and creek
šŸ›¶ Rent a kayak, canoe, standup paddleboard, rowboat and more from the Sharon Woods Harbor for really reasonable prices.Ā

Family Road Trip | Richmond, IN

Richmond Indiana

Looking for a family-friendly getaway with history, adventure and unique charm packed into one weekend?Ā Richmond, IN is worth the trip for the day or the weekend. Visit a historic museum on the underground railroad where thousands of slaves were helped to freedom, tourĀ an elk farm, sample free chocolate all over town and so much more. We were surprised and delighted at all the fun we had!

Consider a trip to Richmond, IN if you’re in Cincinnati, OH (about 1.5hrs away), Columbus, OHĀ (about 1.5hrs away),Ā Dayton, OHĀ (about 50mins away), Indianapolis, IN (about 1hr away).

My top 5 MUST see/eat/do experiences in Richmond: Quiet Harmony Elk Ranch, Levi & Catharine Coffin House, Bismark Donuts, Red Front Grill & Ullery’s Ice Cream. Read more below why I love them!

šŸ“ Want to skip all the planning? Let me take the wheel and follow my weekend in Richmond, IN itinerary. Scroll down to see!Ā

WHere to stay in Richmond, IN

There are several hotel options right off the highway, but I would highly recommend where we stayed, the Hilton Home2 Suites Richmond. It’s perfect for a family with 2-4 kids because the rooms are large with a fullĀ  fridge, a microwave, 2 double beds AND a pullout couch. The hotel includes breakfast and has a swimming pool (check to see if it’s open yet. It was closed due to Covid when we were there) and an outdoor patio with grills to use.Ā

If you’re looking for an airbnb, check out the list of options from the Richmond Convention and Visitors Bureau including one cottage that has a pool.

WHere to eat in Richmond, IN

Right off 70 in Richmond is a great, local restaurant called Red Front Grill & Bar. It has a very eclectic menu, so there is literally something for everyone. Mexican, great pizzas and delicious subs. I highly recommend the Stromboli Sub or the Philly Cheese Steak with the bourbon sauce. SO good! The atmosphere is great for families and a great place to watch a game – there are TVs everywhere.Ā

Bismarck Donuts is a MUST, and they have a drive thru if you’re on your way out of town. Try the apple fritter, glazed twist with sea salt and the cinnamon roll with maple frosting. WOW, so good.

A stop at the homemade ice cream shop, Ullery’s Ice Cream is also a MUST. It’s the best in town and a family run business that started (and still is) a concession ice cream truck at fairs and festivals. Order from the walk up window, or if the shop is open inside, enjoy the variety of flavors in a freshly made waffle cone, waffle bowl or classic ice cream parlor glass bowl.

Ulleryā€™s is a part of Richmondā€™s Chocolate Trail so grab a passport to start your free samples! See more of the chocolate trail below.Ā

Buffalo Wings & Rings is right by Home2 Suites and is a great option for lunch or dinner. I enjoyed the grilled salmon caesar salad and my picky mac n cheese kids really appreciated the kraft mac and grilled cheese option. šŸ˜‰

Mancino’s Pizza & Grinders is a perfect stop for lunch. The pizza is delicious!

If you’re looking for more options, check out this list of restaurants in Richmond my friend Stephanie, from Consistently Curious.Ā

Sample ALL the Chocolate in Richmond, IN

Speaking of eating, kids and adults will love The Chocolate Trail throughout Richmond and surrounding town. With the passports, you can visit 14 places to get FREE chocolate samples including ice cream samples, a brownie for kids, chocolate milk, chocolate chip cookie, a HUGE piece of fudge, chocolate tea, chocolate candy and even a chocolate votive candle.Ā

To get started, grab a Chocolate Trail Passport from The Old National Road Welcome Center: 5701 National Road E. (U.S. 40), Richmond, INĀ  47374.

The Underground Railroad Grand Central Station

a This is a MUST SEE ATTRACTION In Richmond, IN

One of the main attractions and a HIGHLIGHT of the weekend was visiting the LEVI AND CATHARINE COFFIN HOUSE museum and historical sight. It was a main stop for freedom seekers on the underground railroad and became known as ‘grand central station’ because they assisted THOUSANDS of freedom seekers to slavery. It was fascinating and humbling to experience for myself and my kids (4, 7 & 9). My oldest had recently learned about Harriet Tubman, so it was especially eye opening for her.

The interactive museum sets the stage for what slaves experienced and brings some context into the struggle they endured to escape, explaining free states vs. slave states and bounty hunters.Ā

After exploring the museum, you enter the house through the same door that thousands of freedom seekers entered. There, you learn about the business they ran and how that helped fuel their ability to help so many freedom seekers. It’s an amazing experience and worth the trip.Ā

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids over 3. Tours last a little over an hour, but you could easily stay longer.Ā

Outdoor Aventures in Richmond, IN

We always like to find outdoor adventures in every new city we meet. Fresh air and stretching our legs is always a welcomed activity. If you’re looking for this, try one ofĀ  these options that are perfect for families:

šŸ„¾ Hiking at Hayes Arboretum. The nature center was closed due to Covid when we visited, so we hiked. The blue and yellow trails are less than one mile in length, and great for families with some elevation changes but nothing too hard even for my 4 year old. There is a paved trail that is longer and also gives you the option to drive through the arboretum. The Natural Playscape is fun for the little ones.Ā

šŸŖØ Thistlethwaith Falls is an unexpected find. You’re driving through an industrial area and all of a sudden you pull off and find a waterfall. We appreciated it because there was no hiking involved, just a set of steps down to a great places to fossil hunt at the base of the falls. This is close to Bismarck Donuts, so be sure to make that a stop.

šŸš“ā€ā™€ļø Free bike rental for riding on the Cardinal Greenway. Bring kids bikes and rent adult bikes for free at Cycling & Fitness Warehouse, 213 N 3rd St, Richmond, IN 47374 which is just 100 yards or so from the start of the bike trail. Don’t forget helmets!

Quiet Harmony Elk Ranch

unique road trips in ohio
family road trips ohio

This place is a must see mid May through September. When in season, think of it as elk ranch meets a fall pumpkin festival! Viewing the massive, gorgeous elk is a memorable and unique experience, worth the trip. But, they also offer barrel car rides, tunnel slides, a playground, back country ATV rides to view the elk and tours in your car to view the elks grazing. Something to keep you and the kids busy all day. When you get hungry, grab an elk burger on a homemade bun and delicious homemade fudge that’s FREE if you have a chocolate trail passport.Ā

We shopped in the trading post and brought home elk jerky, steak and burgers. Wow, so good and such a healthy option. Once we go back in season, I’ll do another post about all the fun!

Fun, One-of-a-Kind Museums in Richmond, IN

Car lovers will swoon at the Model T Museum in Richmond’s Depot District. Admission is $5 for 13+ and open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. My kids weren’t totally interested, but I had to drag my husband out of there ;). They have over 30 Model T Ford cars of all kinds including a festival concessions car, a grocery car, a medic vehicle from the war and many more. It’s look, don’t touch kind of place, so don’t expect to sit in the cars.Ā

We didn’t have time to experience the Wayne County Historical Museum , but it’s a great option for the history lovers in your family. See Egyptian mummies and the Egyptian room, Richmond-made cars, pioneer exhibits, and more.

Other stops to consider in Richmond, IN

Make Richmond, IN a Pit Stop between Columbus and Indianapolis

Driving between Columbus and Indianapolis? Richmond, IN is the perfect pit stop for the day or even overnight. If you only have a little time, here’s my suggestion:
1. stop at BISMARCK DONUTS to grab some really great donuts – on par with Holtman’s Donuts in Cincinnati – thumbprint cookies & smoothies. They are open until 1pm daily.
2. stretch your legs at an unassuming, small waterfall off the side of the road called Thistlethwaite Falls. I would have never guessed it was there! No hiking involved, just walk down the steps and let the kids hunt for fossils.
3. stop at Warm Glow Candle Outlet for a sandwich and a piece of homemade pie at the hearth cafe. Then stay to shop. It’s a whole lot more than candles. It’s like if the Cracker Barrel gift shop and a fancy flea market had a baby. Great prices, tons of unique decor and of course, candles!Ā

Unique Museums & such

Duckpin Bowling & Pinball at Pins Mechanical in OTR. This place has a great rooftop area with bocce ball. Kids bowl free on Sundays.

Kids are welcome all day Sunday and until 8pm any day. They broadcast games over the sound system, so it’s a great place to watch a game too.

The museum has an admission fee and offers fun programming like Tot Tuesday and Chippie’s Sensational Science Lab. Ask for a grocery cart full of toys at the ticket counter if your littles want to play. The museum sparks imaginative play. The NaturePlay park is free and a great place to play and have a picnic. It’s mostly fenced in, so great for the little ones who wander.Ā

Reds Hall of Fame Museum has fun interactive exhibits and memorabilia from Reds players and teams throughout the years. Smale Park is tons of fun for all ages. We love starting at Carol Annā€™s Carousel (check to be sure it’s open) and then enjoy the splash pad with a view of the NKY riverfront. Thereā€™s a bathroom to change right there. We then head down to the park (down the stairs and across the street) to play on the slides, giant food keyboard and all the other fun stuff. I usually pack a picnic lunch or pick up Jimmy Johnā€™s on the banks to enjoy on the open field there under my favorite bridge, The Roebling.
